IT Haiku

I have little of interest to tell you. I could wax lyrical about work, about the meetings, about misguided senior managers who will. not. listen., about the permanent cat herding of trying to manage diverse stakeholders of differing views and levels of interest; about being piggy-in-the-middle when said stakeholders do not like something that aforementioned senior managers have decided.

Yes I know this is all part of management but I have left out the politics that are going on here. With my boss out of action there are several far more senior people here trying to drive their own agenda with me caught up in the middle trying to get the work done, and that of my boss. Motivation levels are low. See, I told you it wasn't interesting! Also of little interest is the fact thatI have three weeks to complete my MBA project, on which I have made scant progress due to work and the lack of support for it there. I have been forced to take a week off and to attempt to do the whole thing in that week. Running these things in parallel just isn't working and I am getting tired and cranky.

So, I love it when a friend sends me some light relief in the form of a 'funny' email. I got this one last week and it made me smile. I hope you enjoy it too!

In Japan, they have replaced the impersonal and unhelpful Microsoft error messages with Haiku poetry messages. Haiku Poetry has strict construction rules: each poem has only 17 syllables - 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, 5 in the third. They are used to communicate a timeless message, often achieving a wistful, yearning, and powerful insight through extreme brevity. Below are little poetic gems to muse the next time you crash.

The web site you seek
Cannot be located, but
Countless more exist.

Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

Program aborting
Close all that you have worked on.
You ask far too much.

Windows has crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

Your file was so big.
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.

Stay the patient course.
Of little worth is your ire.
The network is down.

A crash reduces
Your expensive computer
To a simple stone.

Three things are certain
Death, taxes and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

You step in the stream,
But the water has moved on.
This page is not here.

Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,

But we never will.

Having been erased,
The document you're seeking
Must now be retyped.

Serious error.
All shortcuts have disappeared.
Screen. Mind. Both are blank.

Hey sweetie :-)

Michele sent me to say - woohoo!! you're taking Time Out!

I like those haiku, but I wonder if even they would grate after the fifth time the works system died (as it did on Friday!)....

I'm looking forward to our date on Thursday - gonna be a fun night. Gonna buy my new DVD tomorrow :-) I see pizza and chocolate in your future :-)

Office politics ruled my life for many years Bobkat so I know how it feels to be stuck in the muck.

Good luck on your MBA project - I'm sure it will be exhausting to get all the work done but imagine how great you'll feel at the finish line - I'm rooting for you.

the haiku was wonderful.

Great error messages.

As for the management thing, I wonder how much heat, as opposed to light, is generated because managers feel compelled to, well, manage in order to justify their existence. I would think that the hardest thing to learn in management is to shut up and get out the way and let the people who know their jobs do them for the good of the company. Instead, managers must stick their wizened fingers into the pie repeatedly in order to generate a report about their contributions when all is said and done.

Bottom line: I'm glad I'm self-employed.

Cheers.

Those are very, very amusing. Maybe if I were the victim I would not be so amused but may well throw a brick at the screen. Peace!
Hi Bob-kat! Michele sent me over. There is much to be said for having one's own business - although that can be hairy at times.

I think I'm going to print these out on cue cards and post them around my home office. These are delightful, and oh so appropriate given our collective struggles with technology.

Thanks for sharing these - and for your patience vis-a-vis my visit. It's been a meteorologically eventful day here in the Great White North. Just getting caught up now!

LOL...I love the haiku. The Blue Screen of Death was is very appropriate, given how often my system has crashed lately.

Here from Michele's today!

Just popped in from Blog Meridian and have to say, your work life, about which I can't find the energy to blog much, sounds a lot like mine. The IT haiku though, is terrific! Best of luck on completing your MBA project.

I wish you the best on getting your school work finished on time.

I hate that work is so stressful that it has driven you to write haikus.

I love haiku and most of these are great! Hope work settles down soon.

Sorry to hear the day job is so stressful. Mine has hit a breaking point ... as in I'm breaking my connection to them as soon as possible to the point of sending out resumes. I have a good feeling and hope to enlighten everyone (including work friends who read my dogs' blog) by the end of the week. Fingers crossed.

And I loved the haikus but craziequeen is right, even they would wear out their welocme.

This is brilliant. Especially the Blue Screen of Death. I wish I had all of these on my computer. I'm tempted to steal them. I'm a compulsive blog kleptomania, but it's usually awards that I steal.

LOL, LOL...These ate quite wonderful, dear B-K....I have a lot of trouble following the "rules" of Haiku....It is a problem for me...LOL! No matter how many times I read the rules....I cannot retain them....Oh Dear! (lol)

Thanks for your visit my dear...! You know, as they keep doing more things below on their property I really admire that they are tring to improve it and make it prettier....It is a work in progress and I can appreciate that it isn't done yet. It is true, from my vantage point the Chicken Coop and the other Coopy looking place are not the prettiest things I've ever seen....BUT, they did leave all the plants we put in on that level nearest my gate, and it appears they are trying to make wonderful use of their little plot of Heaven....!

BTW: I made a little video today that I probably will try to post after my V-E-R-Y long Valentine post...And you are mentioned on this little video....!

Loved the haiku. I hope you are able to get alot of your work done on your MBA. I hate the work politics, it exists everywhere lol...I am lucky that I work at home with the handicapped adults that live with me full time but, we still have to deal with the *caseworkers* and that whole system...some are great and some have no idea what they are doing..so we learn to deal the best we can ..in order to do the best job we can for the clients at the end of the day...Over the last 13 yrs of doing this job, I am free from most of the garbage but have dealt with some DOOZIES nonetheless lol. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP LOL

These are very good. They make me glad I'm not on a PC mostly. I like the haiku now but not sure how I'd feel if I read them following a crash. Hmph.

Time out and decompression is good.

Sometimes its necessary to break the spell. Surround oneself with winners and know when to assert.

If I'm in a jam I sometimes practice the lines/message out loud before the meeting. It is surprising how it can help one 'get in the groove' to make a point to others.

I really like the haiku. I made them into a short javascript randomiser whilst watching the telly and added them to rashbre central's sidebar!
